This earthquake, like other earthquakes the USGS doesn’t want you to know about, was posted sometime overnight because it didn’t show up for me till this morning. In 1/2 hour it’ll disappear from the 24-hour view.

Basically, 90% of the population will never know this happened because of the way the earthquake post was carefully timed. After the first day, the earthquake will fall into the (massive) earthquake bucket and be hard to find unless you zoom into the region and look at the 7-day or 30-day views. Then the bucket will be smaller.

Another way you MIGHT be notified of these earthquakes is with the USGS notification system if you’re willing to give US Surveillance yet another bit of information about yourself. Since the notification system doesn’t tell you the magnitude type (seismic scale) it’s using, it’s otherwise useless. Why doesn’t the USGS just do the right thing and post earthquakes when they happen?
