“Hey boys, how ’bout y’all makin’ yer Ma some wind chimes?”
The four men went about making a set of wind chimes, with four empty dog food cans and an old wrench.
They hung up the windchimes on the front porch, along with a saddle. Kissing her goodbye, they disappeared. The chimes made a lovely, soothing sound in the breeze. She fell asleep.
The next morning she awoke to a scuffling noise. In front of her house was the most exquisite, pure-white unicorn she had ever seen. It had wings that moved like ballet dancers. Majestic and confident, it looked right at her, a saddle inviting her to mount.
She climbed onto the unicorn’s back and it took off, floating on the wind. She was surprised and pleased that the ride was smooth, like gliding on ice. The sky, crystal clear, welcomed them with open arms.
It would be several days before she’d be found dead in her cabin. The sheriff sighed, “Poor woman, lost four boys and a husband. What a lonely old lady and a sad life. She’s in a better place now.”

Nice. I wouldn’t mind taking my leave in the saddle of a shining white unicorn.

Sad, but it sounds like a lovely way to be carried away at the end.

What a lovely magical tale. I could visualize all of it. Dreamy is the word that comes to mind after reading this. I hope that the mother rests in peace. Thank Onchi for another great story for the MFtS challenge. Be well… ^..^

Such a lovely and poignant story… in the end, she was happy. That’s all that matters.
